The Darwin Technical Manual for Botanic Gardens brought together the knowledge and practice of managing a botanic garden in 1998. Evidently, a lot has changed since this time and I was asked to develop the chapter on the ‘Collection Policy’.
This pivotal chapter, like fungal hyphae connecting roots of different plants, joining different areas of the garden together. It provides the collection with scope, purpose and continuity and provides a mechanism to determine and assess targets and goals. The chapter will have something for all botanic gardens, whether they are starting out or well-established.
